Kicking off the shred fest at noon on Saturday, August 7th, Wave House San Diego hosted the first of two qualifying events in which both flowboarders and bodyboarders compete to earn a spot on the Flow Team to represent the US at the IFC (International FLOW Championships). Athletes had to compete on both the FlowRider ® sheet wave and on the main stage, Bruticus Maximus FlowBarrel ® standing wave attraction.
First up, the FlowRider leg of the event and, looking like the most technical skate demo ever, Greg Lazarus threw down to place first in the Men's division. Also taking first was former Wave House employee, Kristen Barney in the Ladies division and Tyler Danek laid his rails down for the win in the Bodyboard division.
Next up, Bruticus Maximus! Clockin’ in some tube time and making it rain with more skate inspired tricks, the boys and girls turned it up in the second leg of Saturday’s competition, Flowboard Strapless and Bodyboard Drop Knee. This time the undergrad Eric Silverman, high school that is, edged out top competitor Gregory Lazarus with some solid finger flips, three shuv’s and his patented strapless front air rocket flip. The Ladies turned the tables in this division as this time, as Amy Luis edged out Kristen Barney. And again, taking first in the Bodyboarding Drop Knee division was Tyler Danek.
By 5pm, the strapped semis were underway, showing off the day’s biggest airs and the most intense competition yet. Putting the crowd in awe, Eric Silverman, Greg Lazarus, Derek Zemen and Brandon Stevens advanced to the finals where Eric Silverman captured his second win of the day. Amy Luis and Kristen Barney, clearly the top contenders, flipped their way to the finals, and Kristen was able to put down another win under her belt. Bodyboarders rode prone in their third division of the day and, yet again, Tyler Danek led the pack to secure his third win of the qualifying series.
All in all, the first contest of the qualifying series was a success!!! Don’t miss out on September 11th when the final contest wraps up and we see who will earn the opportunity to represent the US at the 2010 IFC in Sentosa, Singapore!
