Four teams went head to head last night at the Spring Flow League 2010 Finals. The Funky Town Monkey Riders battled an undefeated Team 8 in the first heat, beating Trevor, Bruce, Laurie and James for the first time by only 5.5 points. These narrow victory earned the FTMR a spot in the finals. Now all they had to do was wait.
The second heat threw the Flow Mob and the Flow Fish into the ring. Level four riders Caleb and Rob shredded the wave, setting the scene for the rest of the match. The Flow Mob managed to capture the win for level four and three riders, followed by a tie between Bob Puetz of the Flow Fish and Keith Porter of the Mob. It all came down to the number ones. James Hodges and Eric Silverman threw tricks and flips galore, battling it out on the Bruticus Maximus. Then, in a moment of desperation, Hodges rocked the only trick he knew Silverman couldn't ... he drank a beer on the wave. Brew in hand James caught massive air, grinning proudly all the while. This last attempt, though creative, couldn't snag the win from the Flow Fish, however, and wonder-boy Eric Silverman took the win, gaining his team enough points to make it to the finals.
This final match of the season had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Who would take the title of Flow League Champions? Would it be the Flow Fish, or would the Funky Town Monkey Riders be funky enough to take the cake? Level three and four riders seemed to favor the FTMR with wins by Scott Novak and Jonathan Redmond, but unfortunately for the FTMR, the Fish picked it up as the heat progressed. Bob Puetz with a personal best ride took the win against Ryan Rosas, as did Eric Silverman over FTMR's sub level 1 rider in place of Justin Welfeld. The final score was 202 to 186.5, giving the Flow Fish the title. Both teams cordially congratulated each other, pledging to bring the competition back stronger than ever in the Flow League season to come.
The time of the season you've all been both waiting for and dreading is finally here. The Spring 2010 Flow League has very nearly come to an end. With only the finals left to take place next Tuesday May 4 (the day before Cinco de Mayo by the way), only four of nine teams have made the cut.
With an undefeated Team 8 and the Flow Fish, with a 6 and 2 record, clearly in the top two, Flow Leaguers wondered, who would take the other two coveted spots? Would it be the Karate Kids, with their stylish airs and daunting good looks? Would the Flow Avengers glitter and glisten their way to the top? Could the Funky Town Monkey Riders be Funky enough to make this THEIR town? Or would the Flow Mob, with their stunning charm and dapper good looks, take the spot?
It all came down to week 8 when wins and losses meant everything. The FTMR captured a win against the Flow Mob in the second heat of the evening, but the Mob was slick enough to make it up in the 5th heat over Team 4. These victories gave both teams a five and three record, thereby trumping the Karate Kid/Avenger competition, and taking them to the finals. Despite having the highest overall points in the League with 1627, the Flow Avengers finished the season with a 3 and 5 record and the number 6 ranking, leaving the Kids in 5th place.
Week 7 was a rainy day for Flow Leaguers as sunny San Diego was anything but. The clouds parted though, as Team 4 took their first win of the season over, of all teams, the number one ranked Flow Fish. While the Fish maintain their number one spot with 1441.5 points, the Flow Avengers and Team 8 are not far behind. With only one week before the finals, competition is heating up in the Spring Flow League.
Bails were a feature this week so if you got barreled, check out the Facebook Album of Bails and be sure to note the captions.
If you rode like a champ (or at least think you did), check out the other Facebook Album for Week 7.
To everyone's dismay, speedos did not make their debut at this week's Flow League. With speedo aficionados Team 4 out judging and the weather chilly, the excitement for this potentially awkward showing only continues to build. Rumors are circulating that Week 8 is indeed THE week. Stay tuned.
The league saw many breakthroughs this week. While Ryan Rosas and Don Swadley successfully landed their strapless aired entries and rocked smiles and fist pumps to prove it, Nate Church lost his costume wearing v-card on the BMax with a stylish viking hat. Brandon Stevens surprised himself with an amazing recovery and was still awestruck as he gracefully exited the wave.
The Flow Fish continue to dominate, ending the evening with a season total of 1441.5 points, thereby increasing their lead ahead of the Flow Avengers, who currently have 1407 points. Tension soared in heat five last night as these two teams competed against one another. Even after a slippery spill on the deck, demonstrating why the 'No Running on Wave Deck' Rule exists, Lisa Szymkowicz, number four rider for the Avengers, rode like a champ. With two kart wheels in the middle of her 45 second set, the Wave Loch employee redefined style on the BMax deck. Number three rider, Thomas Amarante, followed suit and landed his kart wheel with a spash... in the hot tub that is. While Lisa's flair added more than 10 points to her score, her fellow teammates experienced the opposite luck, and the Flow Fish took the win. Not so close behind are the Karate Kids with 1206 points, and Team 8 with 1200. Still the only team with 0 wins is indeed Team 4.
Threats prove useful as nearly all the Flow Leaguers have sent in their bios. For those of you who haven't, you know who you are, your facts are mine for the making. They'll be up and live on the Wave House San Diego website next week.
Yet another Tuesday was upon us last night as the Spring 2010 Flow League season continues. As the Karate Kids and the Flow Fish battle for the number one ranking in the league, the Kids best chop up their game next week with Team 8 close at their heels. Team 4 and Team 9 are holding down the bottom rankings in the 8 and 9 rank spot but they've got a lot of heart... and a high tolerance, and that's what really matters, right?
Team 6 and Team 8 rode twice last night, successfully bringing the evening to a close. Unfortunately for Team 8's competition, they flowed, shredded and carved their way to two victories, putting them only two points away from commandeering the number two spot from the Karate Kids.
The Avengers, not surprisingly, were dressed to impress again last night in their sparkly disco hats and while Amy didn't get a chance to land her flip, Brandon shredded the gnar as one of the best strapless riders in the league. The Funky Town Monkey Riders donned some flashy new rash guards (better late than never) and their defeat never looked as good as it did last night.
Team Bios are in the works with entertaining quotes galore. Johnny Leal reportedly hates his teammates, color of all kinds and food but is not picky with his beverage selection. Ryan Rosas on the other hand is proud to announce his title as World's Strongest Man for two years in a row. Stay tuned for more fun facts you never wanted to know about your fellow flowriders.
Rumors are circulating about one or more teams donning speedos in the near future. One hot pink number made an appearance last night but never got to see the barrel itself. Will next week be the week? Which team will be the first to bare it all? Be there Tuesday to find out!
The Karate Kids stepped up their game this week by rocking some sweet karate headbands, as the Flow Avengers glittered in sparkly caps on the BMax. Team 6 judged and kicked back a few cold ones as Wave House's Flow League took place last night.
The Flow Fish remain the team to beat, with an overall total of 812 points and the number one rank in the league. Not far behind are the Karate Kids with 804 points, but it's anyone's game at this point in the season. Eric S. of the Flow Fish and James S. of Team 8 captured the highest scores last night with a 66.5 and a 65.5. Team 4 suffered yet another defeat, making them the only team without any wins under their belt.
Lisa of the Flow Avengers rode without a rope for the first time last night and successfully solidified her 'local' status as a BMax rider. Both Team 9 and the Funky Town Monkey Riders rode twice last night, thereby beginning the next phase of the League. Team 9 currently has a 1 and 3 record while FTMR are rocking a solid 3 and 1.
Congrats to all who flow'd and flipped last night. Check out the facebook page for many more pictures and of course weekly updates from this Spring's Flow League.
Flow Leaguers came out strong for week three's competition with the Funky Town Monkey Riders judging this week's competition. Celebrating springtime and big birthdays, Nate Church and the Flow Mob were in high spirits and shredded their way to victory this week. With a shout out from the emcee, applause from the crowd and perhaps a bit of liquid courage, Nate showed the League what's up and led his team to with second win of the season.
Keith P. of Flow Mob and Art R. of team 6 came out in great spirits this week, showing the BMax who's boss with the most improved scores from week one until now. Johnny Leal of Team 4 followed suit capturing the third most improved rider so far this season.
Eric Silverman yet again got number one spot, with the highest points overall, but Brandon S. gave him a run for his money falling short by only 5 points. Amy L. of the Flow Avengers rocked a solid flip to secure the highest score among the number two riders, beating Auggie of The Karate Kids by only 1.5 points.
The top three teams as of week three of the Spring Flow League are: Flow Mob in first, Flow Fish in second and the Karate Kids in third. Congrats to all riders!
Thanks to the brilliance of Funky Town Money Rider, Scott Novak, team pictures and bios soon to come!
Happy Shredding.
Flow League session 2 went off without a hitch Tuesday night. With team members donning green in honor of St Patrick's Day and costumes of all shapes and sizes for no apparent reason, the second round of Spring Flow 2010 was a colorful site to say the least. Eric Silverman led his team, The Flow Fish, to the gold, while he himself took the number one spot with 124 points. Tyler Nichols of Team 4 rocked a personal best rising from the 24th rank to the 18th. Art Ruisenor of Team 6 nearly doubled his points from week 1 to week 2 from 21.5 to 39.
With riders ranging from flipping nurses and masked avengers, to big heads, sexy santas and catapulting leprechauns, only the Easter bunny seemed to miss the invite. The crowd soaked up the sun and gasped in awe as riders made whirly birds and strapless kick flips look like a walk in the park.
Whether it was Shamrocks, or excitement after a few week hiatus on the BMax due to weather conditions, no one will ever know. What is sure though, is that if this is what teams bring to the barrel week 2, there's no telling what insanity is to come.
Wave House San Diego kicked off our Spring 2010 Flow League last night, Tuesday March 2nd. Eight teams competed, in the beginning of what is sure to be an exciting season. In case you're not familiar with the FlowLeague, it operates as follows: riders are assigned different levels based on their flowriding abilities. They are placed on teams of four with one rider of each level on each team. These teams then compete against one another. They are given 3 chances each to ride - the top two of which are counted toward their final scores. Riders are given both personal and team scores in addition to overall ranking. Teams are paired up against one another and receive a win or a loss depending on who receives more points at the end of the match. This league began last night and will continue every Tuesday for nine weeks.
Teams included a very animated Team 4 in addition to teams FlowFish and FlowMob. Team 5 trumped, ending the night with the overall number 1 ranking and 219.5 points. Teams 2, 5, 7 or 8 left Teams 1, 3, 4, and 6 in the dust in their respective heats. With some sweet tricks and a recently resurfaced BMax, boards and brews were flying high at the Wave House.
Team 9 judged this first round of intense competition, serving their duties to the League, but not to worry, they'll make their debut next week while another team takes the panel. The crowd was engaged and enjoyed both adult beverages and a Mission Beach sunset as the shredders shredded.
Rocking a bright yellow uniform and some flashy accessories, Team 4 member Johnny Leal seems confident in his teams victory. In an interview, when asked how he felt about this year's FlowLeague, he responded, "Team Four is the greatest." When asked why Team Four is the greatest, he elaborated by saying, "Because we are". Clearly we know how Team 4 feels about their chances and it's fairly safe to say that the other 8 teams have some stiff competition in both the charisma and style category.
