Rusty Surfboards

When it comes to riding waves Rusty Surfboards has been on the front lines of design and progression since 1985...

Rusty Preisendorfer grew up in La Jolla, California where he learned to surf at La Jolla Shores, Scripps, and eventually became a regular at Blacks Beach. As time went on Rusty's passion for surfing extended to his hours out of the water as well when he learned how to shape surfboards. What began as a hobby quickly presented itself as a viable future as Rusty cemented his reputation as one of the best shapers to ever put a planer to foam. The public quickly caught wind as surfing's greats started to win competitions and stand out from the crowd on board's with a simplistic, yet bold, "R dot" on the nose. Mark Occhilupo, the Hobgood brothers, Kalani Robb, Pat O'connel, Taylor Knox, and Jamie O'brien are a few of Rusty's previous team riders and today Josh Kerr, Nate Yeomans, Jay Davies, and a handful of other well rounded, international surfing all-stars wave the Rusty flag high.

Rusty and his skilled team of shapers have been building boards for decades with the experience of shaping hundreds of thousands of boards collectively. With more than 35 surfboard models to choose from and the option to get as creative and personalized as you please with custom orders, Rusty Surfboards has you covered no matter what the surf conditions are like. Whether you need a High Performance Shortboard, an Alternative fun wave model, a Specialty Surfboard, a Stand Up Paddle Board, or anything in between Rusty Surfboards will keep you in the water.

One of Rusty Surfboards most recent creations is called the "Misfit" and it works great in punchy beach break conditions.

Misfit Bio

Rusty and Rusty Surfboards team rider, Jake Halstead, have been working together over the past six months to come up with a board that compliments high performance surfing, is perfect for contests, and works well in any conditions from knee to head high+. The board has a little more area overall (compared to the Redline and other high performance shortboards)- not wider across the center but with the nose being filled out just a tad. The tail template is a bit reminiscent of boards from the mid 80s where there is a little bit of a bump between the fin area and has a full rounded squash. Relaxing the front end while really bending the back. Single concave. Real even flow on the rail line and thickness. Nice clean curves...

If you are looking for a board that can barrel ride with the best of 'em, have a look at the "Slayer" model, which Josh Kerr recently used as his weapon of choice for massive tubes in Tahiti.:

Slayer Bio

The WCT event in Tahiti at the infamous "end of the road' wave Teahupoo saw Josh Kerr not only spent more time in the tube than anyone else, but also scored himself a career best result on the WCT with a 3rd place finish. Kerr is more well known for his flair above the lip, but he let his tube style do the talking in some of the heaviest barrels ever surfed in a WCT event.

Josh laid testament to his Rusty Preisendorfer shaped "Slayer" model's performance throughout the event, helping him excel to the finals. Kelly Slater & Josh Kerr where the only two competitors to ride alternate crafts, crafts that where designed for hi-fi vanishing acts behind the curtain and tight radical turns, look at their results- Slater won it and Kerr narrowly lost to Slater in the semi’s, 'nuff said. Kerr was riding a 6”0 & a 6”2 which you would consider being more suited to your local beach break. The "Slayer" proved itself in the ultimate testing ground of Teahupoo’s gnarly barrels.

Start with a board designed as a next one up and take 4" off the front end- the wide point is now 2" forward of center instead of 2" back. Add a touch of width to the center. Re-blend everything so the front end has a little fuller nose and relaxed rocker. It paddles well, makes the drop and fits because it is shorter. The back end of the board is meant for better waves.Pulling the wide point forward gives you a rail line that feels a little longer, yet offers you more control with less board up front. Lots of R&D last summer. Pros and bros slaying' dragons and draining dungeons in Mex, South Pacific, Bali and Indo.
